Iran Launches Attacks Near U.S. Embassy in Iraq

The president’s administration condemns the missile strikes in the Kurdistan region.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a ballistic missile attack late Monday near the U.S. Consulate in Erbil. The attack killed at least four civilians and wounded six others, according to the Kurdistan Region Security Council.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said, “The United States strongly condemns Iran’s attacks in Erbil today and offers condolences to the families of those who were killed. We oppose Iran’s reckless missile strikes, which undermine Iraq’s stability.”

National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated, “Iran is claiming this is in response to the terrorist attacks in Kerman, Iran, and Rask, Iran, with a focus on ISIS,” adding, “We will continue to assess the situation, but initial indications are that this was a reckless and imprecise set of strikes. The United States supports the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Iraq.”

More than 100 Iranian-backed attacks have been made against U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria since Hamas attacked Israel in October. The American military has responded with retaliatory strikes.
